COMICS! MANGAS! GRAPHIC NOVELS! was the most comprehensive exhibition of comic history ever staged in Germany, 300 original exhibits spanning 120 years of American, European, and Japanese comic art, shown at Bundeskunsthalle Bonn from May to September 2017. Deutsche Welle called it the largest comic exhibition in Germany.
SKY SODA SUPREME created the exhibition film — commissioned by exhibition director Ulrich Best. A one-minute seamless loop shown on large-format screen in the entrance hall throughout the entire run of the exhibition, welcoming every visitor before they entered the show. The concept: a single comic page where every panel comes to life. The camera flies from frame to frame, through a world hand-traced, rebuilt, and animated in three-dimensional space. Original comic panels were manually redrawn in After Effects and Photoshop, then reconstructed in 3D, early aircraft, characters, and environments animated within the panels as if the page itself had come alive. A motion design work created for one of Germany's most significant cultural institutions. Shown to every visitor who walked through the door.
